In November 2010 the UK's leading independent consumer organisation Which? asked three GPs to investigate the quality of health advice online. The GPs spent four days on seven of the most-visited health sites during August of that year.
The criteria against how each GP assessed each category was drawn up with the help of a practising GP and members of the Which? Computing and Which? Policy teams.
The GPs examined the quality of the information across five key criteria: the depth of medical information on the condition; the accuracy of that medical information; how easy that information was to follow and understand; the tone of delivery; and further links.
Patient (then Patient UK) gained joint top position in this investigation, receiving an overall 88% score.
